Black Guillemot

The black guillemot is a lovely seabird that particularly likes Scottish harbours. The only places we've ever seen them are the harbours at Oban; Ardrossan (on the way to Arran) and Brodick (on Arran). As well as the smart plumage you can see in the photo they have lovely red legs and a red gape. We enjoyed watching them swimming around and chasing each other as we waited for our ferry to take us back from Arran. Hopefully if you click on the photos, you'll get a bigger version.

Very nice captures of the Black Guillemot! We see them here along the coastal waters of Maine in the winter.

Oh, look at how the wings look in flight! They're all white! Thanks for sharing these.

A beautiful bird to see and lovely images.
Oban and Arran are lovely places I have been so fortunate to visit.
I used to have family living on Great Cumbrae and spent a lot of my childhood holidays there.
Many thanks for stirring up my memories.

I get used to seeing unfamiliar birds on the blogs of our friends across the pond, bit you've scored quite highly yourself here with your black guillemot and spotted flycatcher. Both new to me :)

I have one spot in Cape Breton that I hike to that hosts Black Guillemots. I just love to go there and watch them. They aren't so easy to capture, are they?? Great job! ~karen
