Cloth sandwich bag

In my last job I worked in the centre of Edinburgh, in an office loud with buskers playing bad music over and over outside the window. I don't miss that at all, but I do miss being 5 minutes away from Henderson's one of the best vegetarian shops in Edinburgh. I used to buy all my lunches from there, they have an excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan rolls and cakes. Now I work in much nicer offices surrounded by birdsong but there are no shops that sell decent food. So I have to make my own lunch and take it into work, which is something I've never done! To avoid plastic packaging I'm making myself some reusable cloth sandwich bags. You can find several patterns for these around the internet, mine make no pretences to elegance or beauty, they're just practical. The fabric comes from an old kimono.

These were very popular at the last big crafts fair I attended. I made some when I got home - pattern off the internet, of course!

__Prettily Practical!

__And on that practical side, they can be laundered, to side-step any inner contamination that may result.
__I long for those days of "no plastic;" brown paper bags, wax paper wrappers, and apples (not apple sauce in a mini plastic tub) all, easily absorbed back into the earth from which they came.

What a great idea. I've tried to get away from plastic packaging as much as possible by using butcher paper and brown paper bags for lunch packaging, but this is much prettier--and cuts down on paper usage.

They may be practical but this kimono lunch bag is elegant and awfully beautiful indeed!
Lunch in style, perhaps eyebrows will be raised and orders will flow in??

I like the fabric, but don't you find the sandwiches dry out something awful?

I agree with Naquillity that looks great in blue: a brilliant idea.

Gardenpath - glad this kind of thing is so popular!

Magyar - oh yes regular laundering, that's why I'm making several!

bunnits, Naquillity, Annette, Coastguard - thanks

Elizabeth - it might be a problem if I were making cheese sandwiches, but so far it hasn't proven a problem with the veggie spreads and pates I've been using.

A wonderful project! I've got a few cloth bags for buying bulk fruits and vegetables too.

great idea! And so pretty. My Mom used to use old Sears paper bags when she made lunches for 5. She would cut them length wise in half and staple them up the side! You never knew what you were getting because she made lunches at night after we were all in bed and she was tired. One time I had a sandwich with just mustard and another time my brother had the paper picture of the lunchmeat but no meat! I would have been the envy of the schoolyard with your Kimono bag.

Fabric bags for lunch! Great idea!

How would an ice cream bar and a hot cup of coffee work in there?

Isn't that a pretty good lunch?

Zoey says NO! Carrots and fruit.
