Poetry and Animals

Yesterday we went to the Botanic Gardens and this haiku is absolutely true and sums up how I feel about animals and how they feel about me:

expecting food -
a squirrel runs to me
and hugs my leg.

I write a lot of poetry about animals, especially birds. Here are some examples from the archives:

Passenger Pigeon

Swifts

In the Dark (for Anya our rabbit)

I have also posted several poems featuring birds over on Bolts of Silk, the most recent being:

Yang Chung's Poem 70 by Duane Locke

First by Frank Praeger

Animals for Totally Optional Prompts

I like your haiku, but I prefer our local squirrels at a somewhat safer distance. :)

Nice bird poems too!

You've got bold squirrels in your neighborhood. Mine are scaredycats even though I feed them.

Yeah! They usually run away from me...

your little haiku scurries along, just like the squirrel

I'm glad the squirrel feelings are mutual - one would hate to think of you being mugged by a little critter!

I love the swifts poem! it tugs at my heart.

In the Dark (sweet) and Swift (sublime) my favorites. Thank you Juliet. As always.

Oh, that made me giggle. Really great job. I love using squirrels in poems. They make such good characters.

Here's an old "squirrely" poem I wrote:

Squirrels are always running in and out of my balcony. I love watching them. Sometimes I fed them out of hand too.

I so enjoyed the anthology you set here for us.

It was hard to choose a favorite of yours, so I just won't try (I did love your rabbit dancing with joy when no one was watching).
